November 12th thru the 15th
As the foggy nights approach and the coastal mists create ideal conditions for wild mushrooms, we invite you to join us for the first annual PNW Puhpowee. Located on the Southwestern most coastal slab of Washington State, the Long Beach Peninsula provides mushroom enthusiasts with over 30 varieties of wild edible mushrooms every year. They thrive under its dank coastal conditions of moist sea air, fertile sandy soil, and protective rows of evergreens. We are not talking about the pale button shaped plastic wrapped specimens at your local grocery store, but the ones growing wild in the recesses of your local forests, fields, and dune grasses. Although a centuries-old tradition in many parts of Europe, interest in foraging for wild mushrooms and wild plant identification is relatively new here in most of the US, but every fall this 43-square mile peninsula becomes the unofficial wild mushroom capital of the United States.
Just across the mouth of the Columbia River, Astoria is a picturesque port city where the Rosebriar Mansion was built by a banker in 1902. Newly renovated, each room has been lovingly restored and beautifully appointed. Located 2 blocks from downtown Astoria, this beautiful mansion will be your jumping off point for our forays to the peninsula and to host the Fantastic Fungi Community Cookbook release party Saturday evening.
An Instagramable Easter egg hunt for adults. This event is timed with the peak seasonal harvest of wild mushrooms and showcases the wide variety of edible wild foraged fungi found in the surrounding lush green forests, grasslands, and dunes. Foragers and mycologists scour the regions’ damp forests set out on a foggy fall trips where they bring home a full fall bounty of Porcini (Kings), Hedgehogs (sweet tooths), Cauliflower mushrooms, Lobster mushrooms, Saffron milkcaps (deliciosus), Chanterelles, Psilocybe azurescens (azzies,) Violet corts and so many more.
There is a certain mystique surrounding all wild mushrooms as Alice discovered in Wonderland, but the ones steeped in the deepest mystique are those associated with psilocybin therapy. With the emergence of legal psilocybin therapy, we wanted to provide a comfortable social environment to learn about safely identifying wild mushrooms. We are hoping after spending some time in our educational classroom it will help demystify all wild mushrooms. We aim to put the tools in your grasp to proceed with confidence foraging your own mushrooms for all their life enhancing uses. We are humble you are considering continuing your wild mushroom education at the first annual PNW Puhpowee at Camp Ruderalis.
